The man who bombed Borussia Dortmunds team bus in 2017 has been convicted of 28 counts of attempted murder and jailed for 14 years.Dortmund defender Mark Bartra was injured when three explosions hit the coach as it left the team hotel for a Champions League match against Monaco on April 11 last year.3

The blast, which also wounded a police officer, was initially treated by the German forces as a suspected jihadist terrorist attack.But it has been revealed Sergei Wenergold, a German citizen of Russian origin, carried out the attack after placing a bet on the club’s share price falling.Wenergold admitted the plot during a trial at Dortmund state court, saying he had not meant to hurt anyone.German football expert Raf Honigstein’s told talkSPORT the attack was a “harebrained get rich scheme.3

Wenergold, 29, was also ordered to pay 15,000 (13,300) to Bartra, who needed an operation to remove debris from his hand.The Spanish defender, who now plays at Real Betis, described the incident as “the longest and hardest 15 minutes of my life”.Tuesday’s verdict ended an 11-month trial that featured testimony from players and then-manager Thomas Tuchel.Prosecutors alleged that Wenergold took out a loan to place a bet that Borussia Dortmund’s share price would drop, then bombed the bus and attempted to disguise the attack as Islamic terrorism.In January, the defendant testified that he carried out the attack but did not intend to kill or hurt anyone.3

Wenergold, a German citizen who came to the country from Russia at 13, told the court that he was trying to fake an attack and designed the explosives in such a way “that no harm to people could be expected”.
