Emiliano Sala’s big money move to Cardiff was given the all clear by FIFA hours before the plane he was travelling inwent missing over the English Channel on Monday night. On Thursday, Guernsey Police called off the three-day search for the striker and pilot David Ibbotson, insisting the chances of survival were extremely remote.
6Sala was on board a plane which disappeared over the English ChannelSalas three-and-a-half year deal was announced on 19 January subject to international clearance which took until Monday to complete, report The Sun.Clubs get deals signed off by uploading documents to the governing body’s Transfer Matching System software, which they have used since 2010.There are 23 pieces of key information that gets checked, including the price of the deal, the payment and the agents involved. The Sun say Salas 15million transfer was cleared on Monday afternoon before leaving Nantes to start training at his new club the following day.
6Flowers and scarves are laid outside Cardiff’s home ground in tribute to SalaCardiff had offered to book Sala on a commercial flight from Paris to Heathrow, which the player declined, with the Premier League club’s chief executive Ken Choo telling talkSPORT there are regrets he did not push for the player to agree to their arrangements, clarifying they had nothing to do with chartering Sala’s private plane.Cardiff City were definitely not involved in making the plane reservations, he said, also explaining the club were trying to get as much information for the player’s sister, Romina, who is in Wales.
6Sala travelled on a Piper PA-46 Malibu plane, like the one picturedOur player liaisons had an offer for Emiliano to fly on a commercial flight from Paris, but basically the player said dont worry about that I have alternative arrangements, Ill see you at the ground on Tuesday. We are trying to get more information for Salas sister today, and she has requested to speak to those representatives to explain the sequence of events and the communication between themselves and Sala in organising the flights. In hindsight we should have pushed [for the commercial flight from Paris] but we had to respect the wishes of the player, we do not want to make players uncomfortable with any arrangements. At 8.23pm the Piper PA-46 Malibu single-engine plane he was travelling in went off radar. His sister has pleaded with rescuers to continue looking but Guernsey Police have confirmed they are “no longer actively searching” for the plane.Romina said: We understand the effort but please don’t stop the search. For us, they are still alive.Salas disappearance has left Cardiff in mourning and chief Ken Choo admits it is difficult for them to also concentrate on football.Choo also told talkSPORT, the club will not be given an extended transfer deadline to sign players.
6Sala had scored 12 goals in 19 games for Ligue 1 side Nantes this season, prompting Cardiff to pay 15m to sign himI have spoken to the Premier League, I have spoken with (managing director) Richard Masters and the Premier League executives yesterday.I said how tough it is for us to cope, given that there is eight days to go and weve been watching Emiliano for months and we finally got it over the line and thenThere are eight days to go and we dont really know how to cope with this scenario. But we have to meet the deadline. The bottom line from the Premier League is we have to meet the deadline like anybody else.
6Cardiff City chief executive Ken Choo spoke to talkSPORT and said there are regrets the club did not push for Sala to take their offer of a commercial flight from ParisHarbourmaster Captain David Barker confirmed the search had been called off.Mr Barker said: “We reviewed all the information available to us, as well as knowing what emergency equipment was on board, and have taken the difficult decision to end the search.“I understand Emiliano Sala’s family are not content with the decision to stop the search and I fully understand that.“I’m absolutely confident that we couldn’t have done any more.”
6The aircraft went missing just off Alderney, which lies 10 miles from the western border of the Cotentin PeninsulaThe Times, meanwhile, understand that Ibbotson was not licensed to carry paying passengers. The newspaper report thatMr Ibbotson, from Crowle, Lincolnshire, told a friend that he was a bit rusty with the controls of the aircraft. and the Federal Aviation Administration register shows Mr Ibbotson as having only a private pilots certificate based on his British private pilots licence.Obtaining a commercial licence requires significantly more training and flying hours. A spokesman for the Air Accidents Investigation Branch said: We are looking at all operational aspects of the flight including licensing. As part of the investigation we will want to establish if the flight was a private or commercial operation.
